Lightening strikes can cause fire damage

When fire damage happens, call the trusted experts at SERVPRO of Lawton
It's severe weather season in Texoma.
In addition to supercell thunderstorms that bring torrential rain and hurricane force winds or tornadoes, these storms also produce an intense light show.
And, while we often hear of grass fires associated with lightening strikes, you may not realize your home or business can also suffer fire damage during severe storms.
The National Weather Service reports that lightning is the cause of about 25,000 fires, including about 4400 house fires, 1800 other structural fires, and numerous wildfires.
And not all damage is immediately noticed. Small sparks from a strike can hide in your attic or walls, or electrical appliances can spark and start a slow fire.
And while you can't prevent a lightening strike, you can help prevent a fire by unplugging electrical devices during severe storms.
And if fire damage happens? Call the name you know and the brand you trust to properly restore your property.
Call the cleanup and restoration experts at SERVPRO of Lawton. We're here to help.

Helping prevent fires with education

Fire damage and fire prevention? There's a PRO for that.
You know we're the ones to call when fire damage happens.
But did you know we also work with local organizations to help educate residents on fire prevention?
Recent frigid temperatures lead to an increase in fire damage calls, and one local housing authority asked Marketing Representative Denise Henry if SERVPRO could provide a fire safety class to residents.
Because we're always here to help, in any way we can, we compiled goodie bags and fire safety hand out sheets and headed to a local community center for the presentation.
Over 40 residents were on hand, and were very receptive to the information. Many thanked us for the safety tips and reminders, and the director was truly pleased that we would take the time to offer prevention tips to the residents.
Opportunities like these are why SERVPRO is the #1 recommended fire and water cleanup and restoration service.
Because it's not just about our services. It's about the service we offer to our community.

Dealing with fire and water damage

When it's fire, water and smoke damage, call the trusted experts at SERVPRO of Lawton
This may come as a surprise to you, but fire damage may not be your biggest concern when a fire strikes your home. In order to put the fire out, your local fire company uses a lot of water. While this sounds like a great idea at the time, all that water can cause damage to areas of your home not affected by the fire directly. This is why it’s important to examine all areas of your home after a fire for damage, even those places where the fire didn’t reach.
The amount of water a fire department uses to put out your house fire can easily exceed one thousand gallons. That’s a lot of water for the structure of your house and your belongings to absorb in a short amount of time. In addition, if the fire is hot enough, some of that water gets converted to steam, which can penetrate areas the liquid water may not be able to reach. This is why your home can suffer significant water damage in addition to fire damage when a fire occurs.
Firefighters have one goal when they arrive at your house fire: to put out the fire as quickly as possible. To do this, they use powerful hoses to deliver the water into your home. While a fire hose is an efficient way to deliver a huge amount of water to a confined area in a short period of time, they can also cause damage to your home when dragged through rooms.
Fire damage isn’t the main problem you deal with after a fire. It's fire, water and smoke damage. When that happens, call the experts at SERVPRO of Lawton at 580-699-2662.

When it's more than fire damage

Basement storage suffers water damage after fire fighting efforts
Typically, we think of fire damage as images of burned out, hollow structures.
But oftentimes, the damage is more subtle, yet just as destructive.
This retail warehouse suffered fire damage on the main floor of the facility. Once the fire alarm system was activated, the sprinkler system also activated and helped to control the fire.
Once the fire department completed their inspection and determined the structure was safe, the owners call our team at SERVPRO of Lawton to begin the restoration process.
Our team noted the fire damage on the main floor, along with the water damage caused by the fire suppression system.
We also noted the basement had severe water damage due to fire fighting activities, and had standing water throughout the area.
Our teams began extracting water from the basement area as we also prepared to pack out, move out and demo the affected areas.

What's the number one cause of home fires?
3/16/2021 (Permalink)
Avoiding distractions while cooking can prevent kitchen fires.
Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. And the leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking.
We've all been there. It's been a busy day, you've rushed home from work to start dinner, and the kids are fussing in the other room.
You've probably yelled at them a time or two before leaving the kitchen to see what the fuss is all about.
And just like that, a fire can start.
It doesn't take long for a small, unattended fire to become a much larger problem.
At SERVPRO of Lawton, we know how destructive a cooking fire can be.
We also know that the majority of cooking fires can be avoided.
- Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol, don’t use the stove or stovetop.
- Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling, or broiling food.
- If you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
- Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.
Eliminating distractions is one of the easiest ways to help prevent cooking fires!

Fire leaves tenant with nowhere to go
11/10/2020 (Permalink)
Fire damaged apartment is not safe for tenant
If you've ever been to the scene of a fire, you know the damage caused by the fire itself, as well as smoke, soot and water damage.
Typically, very little is left for the family to take with them. And what may be restorable must be properly cleaned before sending to a new family home.
This apartment fire was no different than many we see. Except the occupant was an elderly lady, with no family close by and no available units for her to relocate to.
The property manager contacted another (unrelated) complex to see if they could assist.
And they did. They offered an apartment free of charge for three months. The current property manager offered to take care of the restoration of her property. And the onsite handyman helped her gather a few essentials and drove her to her new home.
We are so proud to be a part of a community that cares, and is here to help their neighbors.
SERVPRO of Lawton. Together with our community, we can make fire damage "Like it never even happened."
Fire destroys home and garage

Fire damage leaves few belongings intact
One of our agents called to let us know a customer of his had suffered a major house fire and needed help.
Our team of expertly trained professionals went to inspect the loss and were stunned by the damage.
The left wing of the home was covered in soot and smoke damage. The entire middle section of the home was a pile of charred debris. And the right wing, which contained the garage, was barely standing.
Our technicians noted that the contents in the left wing would need to be packed up and moved out to our warehouse for cleaning and restoration.
The rest of the home was a complete loss.
Once we received the notice to proceed from the adjuster, we began the job of documenting each item and packing everything up.
All told, this customers contents were cleaned and restored within three weeks. We kept her property secured in our warehouse until she was ready for us to deliver them to her new home.
That was a happy day for everyone involved!

Fire destroyed this chimney unit
When a landlord calls us about an apartment fire, we immediately think of a large amount of damage.
In this case, we were surprised that while the exterior of the unit suffered fire damage, the apartment itself did not.
As we inspected the property for smoke or soot, we realized the unit was clean and did not require our services.
The exterior of the unit had been inspected by the property manager and their contractor, and plans were already underway to remove the damaged areas.
When the manager asked how much he owed us for the inspection, we replied "no charge."
He was pleasantly surprised and very thankful that we responded quickly and were not charging him for the site visit.
And he assured us that if he ever needed any damage restoration services that he would definitely call us.
Why call SERVPRO of Lawton for your damage restoration needs? Because our services go beyond just restoration. We care about your loss, and we're here to help.

Small chimney fire causes major damage
Have you had your chimney inspected recently?
This homeowner didn't realize the inspection of their new home did not include a thorough inspection and cleaning of their chimney.
At the first sign of a cold spell, the owners built a fire and were enjoying its warmth when a neighbor called to notify them their roof was on fire.
911 was called, and the homeowners and their neighbors stood outside watching the firefighting efforts.
While firefighters were tearing holes in the roof to gain access to hot spots, inside the home ceilings were being torn down to ensure the flames were completely out.
One small spark from a damaged flue left a big mess inside and outside of the home.
SERVPRO of Lawton responded to this customers call quickly, and began the clean up and restoration process.

Fire and smoke damages nursery
What started as a quiet evening for a young couple and their baby soon turned dark and hectic.
Noise in the street drew their attention outside, where local police officers were staged around their property.
Scared and confused as to what was taking place, the couple retreated to the baby's room to protect their daughter.
Moments later, a tear gas cannister crashed through the window, and in the turmoil that followed a fire broke out.
After evacuating the property and visiting with officials, it was determined that the young couple was not in violation of any laws, and the incident was merely a mistake.
Not a normal course of events in the quiet towns of Southwest Oklahoma.
And certainly not what the homeowner expected to learn about the next day when she visited the property.
Thankfully, she called SERVPRO of Lawton to begin the fire restoration process.

House fire leaves every room a mess

Soot and water damages kitchen after house fire
Yesterday's blog discussed three of the seven steps SERVPRO of Lawton takes to restore your home or business after it has suffered fire damage.
Today, we'll address the final four steps:
Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.
Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing
We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Step 7: Restoration
Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
