Wet insulation is removed with help from the latest technology
We recently had a customer ask us how we remove insulation from the attic after a roof leak. This is how we do it! Our insulation removal vacuum was designed to remove fire, smoke and water damaged insulation from wall cavities and attics.
(Definitely the way to do it over using a shovel and black trash bags in a hot attic.)
We love the innovation in our industry and regularly reinvest in new equipment and technology!
At SERVPRO of Lawton, we use the science of drying to ensure your property is completely dry and the environment is healthy.
And we understand water damage is personal, and emotional. You can rest assured our team of professionals will treat you and your property with dignity and respect.

What's the most common type of water leak?
10/13/2022 (Permalink)
Whatever the source, SERVPRO of Lawton is here to help
Customers often ask us which is the most common type of water leak.
Typically the toilet is the most frequent culprit. Followed by kitchen appliances and the hot water heater.
Followed by roof leaks, especially here in Texoma. Sudden thunderstorms and high winds leave roof damage that may go unnoticed until the next rainstorm.
This customer suffered a combination of those loss types.
The building was vacant during the pandemic. Numerous severe storms damaged the roof, allowing water to pour in.
That damage caused the ceiling to collapse, leaving wet materials on the carpet below.
And, because the building was vacant, there was no heat, causing frozen and busted pipes.
When a neighbor noticed water seeping out of the foundation, he called the owner, who called us.
We've seen a lot of damage, but this was bad. Large piles of wet and moldy insulation and sheet rock, on top of wet and moldy carpet.
The damage also affected the walls, requiring us to strip the building down to the studs and concrete flooring.
It was a large building, and it took time to remediate it properly.
When water damage is more than just a small leak, call the restoration experts at SERVPRO of Lawton.

Layer by layer revealed wet materials in the kitchen and adjacent living room. All the new laminate floors had to be removed, as well as carpet, baseboards, sheetrock and insulation.

In the end, the agent said she had a new appreciation of our services. She had recommended us before, and will continue to do so.

Basements can hold water and lead to mold
Texoma has it's own weather patterns. We could be facing borderline drought conditions, then flood due to heavy rainfall. That's why few homes in our region have a basement.
The shifting grounds tend to crack the walls, allowing our higher water table to seep in and rain to pour in.
Take this basement. The homeowner had moved out and placed the property up for sale. He also turned off the electricity.
Why does that matter? Because if you have a basement, you have a sump pump. And that requires electricity to pump water out of the space.
Thankfully, a realtor showing the property knew what the problem was, and how to fix it.

Water damage tips

Time matter when it comes to water damage
What You Can Do Until Help Arrives
After any water damage situation, your primary focus should be safety:
- Is it safe to stay in the house?
- Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards are some of the most prevalent concerns.
- Only do activities that are safe for you to perform.
- Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!
What To Do After Flooding
- Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
- Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.
- Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
- Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
- Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
- Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
- Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
- Gather loose items from floors.
What NOT To Do After Flooding
- Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
- Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
- Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
- Don't use television or other household appliances.
- Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Get The Facts About Mold Growth After Flooding
10/14/2021 (Permalink)
While water damage is usually visible, mold damage may be harder to see
Flooding from broken pipes can cause massive amounts of damage if not cared for properly. Water damage can ruin flooding and sheetrock, leading to extensive repairs that may be expensive. The longer water is left unattended, the more damage it can cause, so the water cleanup process should be done quickly and efficiently.
Damage from a broken pipe may be limited to a single room or, if left undetected for several days, could spread throughout an entire floor. To understand exactly needs to be done, it is important to remove any remaining water with the help of a sump or a trash pump and then thoroughly examine the damaged area. There are two types of damage to look for:
1. Water damage. This type of destruction involves any damage to the structure of your home from the flood. It includes ruined wood flooring, carpet, sheetrock, and insulation, among other structural components.
2. Secondary damage. Unlike other types of damage, this type of problem may not be visible without a thorough investigation. Warm, moist environments can become a breeding ground for mold, mildew, and bacteria, so these fungi and pathogens thrive under wet carpet and in porous materials. In many cases, removing mold is more difficult than repairing structural damage.
Not only is repairing and restoring your home from flooding often difficult and time-consuming, but fixing secondary damage often requires the help of a qualified restoration company. Household cleaning products may not be strong enough to remove mold, and thoroughly disinfecting the area is necessary for safety. Call for help quickly to reduce the amount of damage caused by flooding.
In many cases, having broken pipes is difficult to handle on your own. After assessing the damage, calling a company for the water cleanup process may be a good idea. To reduce the impact of water damage, the issue should be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Visit http://www.SERVPROlawton.com for more information on water damage.

We're accustomed to our agents calling when a customer suffers fire, water or smoke damage.
One call was different. The agent herself called to report water damage in her home, and she needed help.
Our team of expertly trained technicians met the agent at her home, and it was a mess.
The line to the ice maker had been leaking unchecked, and the damage wasn't discovered until they noticed the squishy floors.
Our team quickly began to move appliances and pull up the flooring to determine to size of the loss.
Layer by layer revealed wet materials in the kitchen and adjacent living room. All the new laminate floors had to be removed, as well as carpet, baseboards, sheetrock and insulation.
The drying process required 5 days to ensure it met our SERVPRO dry standards.
In the end, the agent said she had a new appreciation of our services. She had recommended us before, and will continue to do so.
We like good neighbors like that!
Leaking roof damages ceiling, walls and flooring
11/12/2020 (Permalink)
Large water volume causes ceiling to collapse

In each of these cases (and many other instances) the agents called SERVPRO of Lawton.

Whether you have fire, water or smoke damage, or need a viral cleaning, call the trusted experts at SERVPRO of Lawton.
When it's more than just water damage
10/19/2020 (Permalink)
Mold growth after untreated water damage
We're often asked why we can't give an estimate over the phone based on the information the customer is providing us.
This picture explains it all.
We had a customer call to report a water leak. Squishy carpet, some standing water. She told us it probably just needed water extraction and some drying time.
She understood we couldn't give her an estimate without inspecting the damage, and let her know a technician was on the way.
Upon arrival, our technician noted the loss had happened "a few weeks ago."
Which was very evident from the visible growth on the flooring, sheetrock and other surfaces.
The customer then asked if we could inspect the basement, because she was concerned with possible damage.
And yes, there was damage. Significant damage. No longer water damage after "a few weeks."
Now it's mold damage. Severe mold damage.
Calls like this is why we offer free inspections. To see the whole picture, so we can better serve our customer's needs.
Not an ideal way to start the day

Roof leak dampens morning enthusiasm
It's just after 5:00 am when my phone rings. One look at the caller ID, and I know it's not good news.
So instead of answering "good morning," I say "what happened?"
The caller is a business friend, so I know that an early morning phone call means she's in trouble.
And she's calling me for help.
What happened was a clogged roof drain and gutter system had failed, leading to water pouring into the attic above her closet.
The photo shows how the area looked when my technicians arrived to begin the drying and restoration process.
Thankfully, her quick thinking had minimized further damage, and we were able to remove wet materials almost immediately.
I checked in on her later that morning at her business, and we discussed the drying protocol over a freshly brewed cup of coffee.
I jokingly asked if she would answer her phone and deliver emergency coffee to my team in the future.
Her answer? "I'm not SERVPRO!"
Three strikes, but he's not out
10/14/2020 (Permalink)
The high gloss isn't the finish: it's water
They say bad things happen in groups of three.
For this customer, that may just be the case.
In March, he had to close his business due to COVID-19. After reimaging the space and flow, he was able to reopen and resume business under the new normal.
In April, a devastating storm blew out the windows on his home and destroyed his roof, leaving debris and water throughout his property.
Fast forward to July. Life still isn't quite back to normal, but the restoration work is done and he and his family are looking forward to a quiet summer.
Until one morning when he notices water standing in the sunroom. And pooling into the adjacent living areas that had just been restored.
With a deep sigh he picked up the phone and called his trusted professionals at SERVPRO of Lawton.
We helped him through the cleanup and restoration process before, and we did it again.
We're honored he continues to utilize our services, and we appreciate his referrals.
We also hope these are the final strikes 2020 delivers!

Water damage can lead to secondary damage
9/12/2020 (Permalink)
Undetected leaks cause big problems
Water doesn't just damage your belongings - it also causes serious property damage if left untreated.
We typically see mold growth within 72 hours of a water loss that wasn't dried properly. Or, in this case, a slow water leak that went undetected until the homeowner smelled mildew.
A quick check under the washer and dryer led to the discovery of the leak, which a plumber quickly repaired.
I would say SERVPRO of Lawton technicians immediately began the drying process, but this home was built in 1963.
So before any work could be done, samples of the drywall, taping materials and flooring were sent out for asbestos and lead based paint testing.
Once the results came back (negative on both), we could begin the restoration process.
Containment of the area was established to prevent contamination of other living areas, drywall and insulation were removed, as were the baseboards and flooring.
All told, the experts at SERVPRO of Lawton worked five days to completely dry and restore this home to a healthy environment.
Water damage doesn't take a break, even during a pandemic.

Wet hotel rooms dampen hopes at this hotel.
The hospitality industry has suffered this year, as events canceled and travelers postponed trips.
Now that some areas are returning to a more normal pattern, the last thing our local hotels needed was a water leak.
The manager at this facility called SERVPRO of Lawton the moment his housekeeping staff notified him of a leak. On the fourth floor. Which traveled all the way to the first floor.
Our team of expertly trained professionals arrived quickly and immediately began extracting water from each floor, and each room affected.
Onsite maintenance teams helped move furniture so our teams could continue to work and implement a drying strategy.
It was a long day, but at the end of it air movers were in place and the drying process well underway.
The manager was thankful they weren't fully booked, and that our team at SERVPRO of Lawton was able to respond quickly to his loss.
